Were your military ancestors, or their next of kin, receiving pensions in 1840 for serving in the Revolutionary War?
On the back of the population schedules for the 1840 census, enumerators recorded the living pensioners of the Revolutionary War as well as other military service. The lists also noted an individual’s age and the name of the head of household in which the individual lived.
The lists were subsequently published in A Census of Pensioners for Revolutionary or Military Services; with their Names, Ages, and Places of Residence, as Returned by the Marshals of the Several Judicial Districts, under the Act for Taking the Sixth Census.
