The Cyprus Emergency lasted from 1955-1960, up to 25,000 troops were involved in the conflict, at a time when Greek Cypriots wanted to be united with Greece, a concept called Enosis. A military campaign by EOKA (Ethniki Organosis Kipriakou Agonos – the National Organisation of Cypriot Fighters), a Greek Cypriot nationalist paramilitary group, started in April 1955 to try to terminate British rule in Cyprus and create a union with Greece. Much of the conflict occurred around the capital city of Nicosia.
The conflict ended in 1959 with the Zurich/London Agreements, which ended British rule in Cyprus and a new Republic of Cyrus was created in 1960. Cyprus became a member of the Commonwealth of Nations in 1961.
