The Lives the First War website was a partnership between Findmypast and the Imperial War Museum to commemorate the men and women who made a contribution or sacrifice to Britain’s First World War effort in recognition of the 100 year anniversary.
The Imperial War Museum used records such as Medal Index Cards to identify individuals to be included in the digital project, members of the public then had the ability to add to these life stories to make them as accurate and complete as possible.
Lives of the First World War stories include official sources such as military and family history records, external references, publications, and original images.
Remember, some soldiers used an initial or a diminutive instead of a first name, so you should be aware of possible alternatives to your ancestor’s first name.
When searching for military personnel, begin your search with only a name. Not all records included service number, regiment, or birth place.
