Recording of The Minnesota State Census of 1885 started on May 1, 1885. Minnesota is known as the land of 10,000 lakes because of the state’s large number of lakes. It is the home to 11,842 lakes in total. Minnesota is the 12th largest state in area and contains some of the oldest rocks on earth. The state census is an excellent resource for genealogists because you can track your ancestors’ residence during the years between the federal census records.
One year after this census was recorded a tornado swept through St Cloud and Sauk Rapids killing 79 people. It was one of the most destructive tornadoes in the state’s history. On April 14, 1886 the natural disaster tore its way through St Cloud killing people, overturning railroad cars and destroying homes. Almost every business in St Cloud was annihilated. It continued its path of death and destruction to Sauk Rapids, were it almost flattened the entire town. In 1888 Minnesota witnessed another deadly natural disaster. On January 12, 1888, the state experienced a blizzard, which killed about 200 people.
