The Queensland Land Orders 1861-1874 index was compiled from several different registers relating to land orders, which were created and used by the immigration department of the Australian state of Queensland.
Under Queensland legislation, land order claims could be made for the passage to Queensland by either the immigrant themselves or by others who were providing their passage.
This index was drawn from registers which recorded the land orders issued to immigrants after they had completed their obligations under various immigration laws and regulations in force in 1860s Queensland.
While the information collected in each register may vary, they tend to include administrative details such as the land order number, the name of the applicant or immigrant, the date of issue and delivery, the acres, relevant regulation, and amount paid.
One of the registers of which the index is comprised, Series ID 13148, records land orders that were issued to employers of immigrants. These particular records included details of the employer, such as their name and company. When searching the index, remember to check all possible spelling variations, and keep in mind that all first names are abbreviated as they appeared in the original records. The handwriting on the original records was particularly difficult to interpret and often faded.
This index was sourced from Queensland State Archives, to learn more about how to use the index to order copies of the original documents follow the link to the archives in Useful Links & Resources. To order a page from the land order registers, you must complete an index order form on the archive’s site. Note that charges apply for these copies.
