The Queensland Register of Immigrants 1864-1878 index was compiled from registers kept by the assistant immigration agent in the town of Toowoomba, in the Darling Downs region of Queensland, Australia.
Maintained between 1864 and 1878, this register contained details of applications for passage certificates for immigration that were registered in Toowoomba. Usually this involved noting information such as the date, the immigrant’s name and age, their trade, their country of origin, the amount paid for the application, the name of the depositor, and various notes.
The Queensland Register of Immigrants 1864-1878 on Findmypast typically lists the names of both the immigrant and the person applying on their behalf, or the depositor. This makes it a particularly useful record if you are interested in finding out how your ancestor came to Toowoomba, Queensland during this period, and who assisted them in this journey. Interestingly, the majority of immigrants listed in the register originally came from Ireland.
When searching the index, remember to check all possible spelling variations, and keep in mind that all first names are abbreviated as they appeared in the original records.
