Sarah Elizabeth Doyle

Doyle was an educational reformer and educator. She played a role in both the founding of the Rhode Island School of Design and in getting female students admitted to Brown University. From her death record in this collection, we learn that she was born in 1830 and died on 21 December 1922 at the age of 92. Her parents are listed as Thomas and Martha. Her place of death is recorded as being Providence, Rhode Island.

Helen Adelia Rowe Metcalf

Helen Metcalf was a founder and director of the Rhode Island School of Design in 1877. A group of women from Rhode Island, inspired by the 1876 Centennial Celebration, banded together to start the school in Providence. During its early days, the classes were composed mainly of women, learning ‘useful arts’. From her burial record, we learn that Helen Metcalf was 64 when she died on 1 March 1895. Her husband is listed as Jesse. Metcalf was buried in Providence, Rhode Island.
